How Important is it to have humour in your life?

Laughter is the best medicine. This short sentence is commonly used to tell others that they should stay happy and cheerful, to stay healthy.

We all love to laugh. Whether it’s tittering away at your favourite TV show or having a giggle with your pals, laughter makes us feel good. There is field of research known as Gelotology — the study of laughter — that is continuing to build upon the evidence that laughter doesn’t just have a short-term effect on our moods and emotions. It can actually help us live much happier and healthier lives in the long run, too.

Hence, it is important to bring in a doze of humour into your life. Not everyone is naturally blessed with a sense of humour. In my view sense of humour is not just an ability to crack jokes or exclaim a wisecrack at any situation or have a laugh at the cost of another person.

It is a lot more than that. It is an ability that gives you the confidence to laugh at your own self, when everything in your life is going south. It is the confident realization it just a passing phase and there is always something to look forward to. It is often the only silver lining to a dark cloud.

It not only gives a momentary happiness, but as science has established, it releases the hormones that alleviate your stress and make you feel better instantly.

The Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi has been quoted as saying that one should approach life with the following tenet: “To the most trivial actions, attach the devotion and mindfulness of a hundred monks. To matters of life and death, attach a sense of humor.”

What do you think? Did you get your doze of laughter today? What makes you laugh usually? Are you someone who can spot some humour in every situation or are you the grumpy types who struggles to laugh? Please share your thoughts in comments below.
