Karnataka politics — what a sad joke!!

The state of Karnataka in India is going through a political crisis. It is setting an example for everything that is wrong with Indian politics. All the major actors in the Karnataka drama are exposing themselves for the power hungry, greedy, selfish sharks that the worst kind of politicians in our movies are portrayed as.

The expression on the speaker’s face tells a sorry story. (Image courtesy — PTI and hindustantimes.com)

Starting with the governor of the state, speaker of the assembly, CM, leader of opposition and all the major leaders in the state have come out as spineless and uncaring, plainly interested only in furthering their own short sighted political ambitions.

The 15–16 MLA’s who have resigned are camping in a hotel in another state for more than two weeks now. I wonder who is paying their bills. Have they retired from politics? Do their constituencies have no problems? Are they even meeting their constituents?

A no confidence motion with debates does not take more than two days to be completed even in parliament. Why is this being prolonged for more than 4–5 days in Karnataka assembly? What kind of speeches are being made? And while this drama is going on, what is happening to the governance in the state? If the bureaucrats are running the state without the political leadership, why don’t we just make that a permanent model and get rid of all politicians?

The whole situation is so farcical and in one’s face, yet nobody from either side of the political leadership at the national level has spoken about bringing this to an end.

The residents of Karnataka made a big mistake by not giving a clear mandate to any party in the last assembly elections. Since then, it is only the people who are suffering.

I wonder if anyone in our political leadership has the spine to call a spade a spade and end this charade, dissolve the assembly and call for fresh elections.
