Working after lunch
(This topic came as a challenge on the YourQuote app and I wrote the following.)
Trying to work after lunch is like pushing a car uphill. It is not easy and every minute of trying to focus on it makes it more difficult. What I do to handle this is:
- Take a short walk – outdoors if the weather is good or just around the office and say hello or chat with a few colleagues for 10–15 minutes before getting back to my desk.
- Try and take a task that is not very intense and does not require a lot of thinking. If it’s a pleasant task then it is easier to get it done.
- Work with someone else – pick on a task that requires you to have a meeting with someone or a phone call or make/return any phone calls that you have been postponing.
- If nothing works, take a short power nap in a comfortable corner of the office. I have never succeeded in doing this but I know many people who do this. I have also heard of organisations that allow you to take naps at work place.
- Drink water at frequent intervals starting 30 minutes after lunch. Not only will it keep you hydrated, the frequent trips to the washroom will keep you awake. :-)
- Drink black coffee or whatever form of caffeine you like. It does help for a while. But one shouldn’t drink too much of it.
Let me know what you do to fight the post lunch lethargy.
